Launch Wireless Products in India with WPC Certification

The Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) Wing, functioning under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is the authority responsible for granting approvals for wireless and radio frequency-based devices in India. If you are dealing with products such as Bluetooth speakers, Wi-Fi routers, drones, or smartwatches, obtaining WPC certification is mandatory before import, sale, or use.

Types of WPC Approvals:
WPC primarily grants two types of approvals:

  1. ETA (Equipment Type Approval): For devices that operate in license-free frequency bands like 2.4 GHz (used in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth).

  2. Import License: For wireless equipment that requires a license and operates in restricted frequency bands.

WPC Certification Process:

Step 1: Frequency Check
Determine if your device uses a license-free or licensed frequency. ETA is needed only if the product uses a de-licensed frequency.

Step 2: RF Test Report
An RF (Radio Frequency) test report from an accredited lab (preferably NABL or ILAC certified) is required. If the testing is conducted outside India, it should be recognized by Indian authorities.

Step 3: ETA Application
Submit the RF report along with the application for Equipment Type Approval on the Saral Sanchar portal.

Step 4: WPC Review & Approval
The WPC evaluates the documentation and, upon approval, issues the ETA certificate.

Step 5: Import License (if needed)
For equipment not covered under de-licensed frequency, an import license must be applied separately through WPC.
